Filmsi - A not so serious look at films and film reviews

Anything film =D

The Romantics, 2010

The Romantics is a indie/hipster romantic comedy that is neither romantic or comedic but more pretentious than entertaining. For those who have never heard of The Romantics consider yourself lucky. But if you are still interested I have attached a link to the trailer below.

A link to the Movie Trailer

As you can tell from the trailer the Romantics follows 7 friends coming together to celebrate the wedding of their friends Tom and Leila at Leila's parent's sea side home. All is not so sweet Leila's maid of honour and suppose best friend Laura is in love with the groom. And there is a common suspicion that he may be in love with her too. It's no secret that Tom and Laura dated for 4 years prior to him getting together with Leila. So things are a little complicated when Leila and Tom are about to wed.

From the description and the trailer it honestly looks like an interesting and intriguing movie that could be wonderful but how wrong was I. Before I watch a movie I generally look at the Rotten Tomatoes to see what the general consensus was and usually I ignore it and watch the movie anyway. So when I read all the overwhelming notions of repulsion they had for this movie I simply ignored it but this time it was completely justified.

I have never dislike a movie this much since I watch Transformers 2 and that seemed like a masterpiece in comparison to The Romantics. As I have eluded from the beginning this indie romantic comedy is more pretentious than entertaining. It's all sorts of bad. For one thing none of the characters I repeat none of the the characters were likable or even worth any emotional response. The supporting characters were not only boring but irrelevant and the only emotional response I could give was indifference. As for the main characters; Leila (Anna Paquin) the bride seemed annoying and down right of a control freak. While Tom (Josh Duhamel) although a pretty face was unfaithful and is stupid little boy that believes that he can have his cake and eat it. And then comes the Laura (Katie Holmes) who seems like the heart broken friend until you realise how much of back stabbing bitch she is when she sleeps with her best friend's groom the night before the wedding not to mention possibly many more times during their relationship. HOW THE FUCK can this work? How you can you marry someone when you are sleeping with their best friend and not feel bad. Furthermore how can you sleep with your best friend's boyfriend and make the whole thing about your pain??

Maybe there is some deep and complex issues between these characters but none of it was shown in the movie. The audience comes in the movie with no prior knowledge of their relationships and we are told that these are the facts. Um sorry what? Was I suppose to like these people? Moreover am I suppose to care about these people?? What the hell is going here?? What is this like some swingers sort of friendship??

If the character Laura wasn't bad enough Katie Holmes solidify why I don't like watching her at all. Reminiscent of her early days as Joey from Dawson's Creek...she acted as if she was some sort innocent bystander in this movie not to mention she was dull and boring.

SO the characters are bad and the story is equally terrible but to make things worse it was incredibly boring to watch...nothing overly interesting happens until the very end. Shaky camera work made me be dizzy...long pauses and scenes of the sea and other places was pointless and did not add to the dramatic effect. Scenes between the supporting characters seemed pointless as they were never explored and oddly placed as we didn't really give a shit about them.

In other words this was a movie that I just simply wasted my time in watching. I cannot express this more clearly DO NOT watch this film. It's that bad.
I will give it a 2/10 for the other pretty faces in this movie namely Adam Brody, Dianna Argon and Marlin Akerman.
