What we learn about St. Paddy's from Hollywood
So in the grand tradition of St. Patrick's day ( and my birthday as well..)let's celebrate a couple things Irish in film. Here are a couple of things that didn't really fly, and some that did but hey good thing they tried...
Leprechaun - The movie
Somehow a weird looking leprechaun wasn't really scary, just incredibly stupid. The irish accent didn't realy make him scary, just made him seem like he needed a good hug. Just give him the gold Jennifer, give him the gold!
My left foot
So someone found a way to do something useful with the left foot? Genius.
In the name of the father
Dad and son duo fight for injustice, Sinead O' Connor resurfaces sans shaved head and ripped Pope photograph.
Micheal Collins
It's braveheart. In Ireland, with a scottish actor yeah!
The Departed
Ah, Irish mobs and spys who can ask for anything more?
In America
Cute Irish kids play angel and hope for America awww.
The crying game
Guys falls for girl. Girl is boy. Vomiting ensues and then fall in love.
The matchmaker
Janeane Garofalo in one of her few cutesy films about her going to Ireland. Cute!
Far and away
By far the best " Kidman/ Cruise duo, is it wrong that Tom Cruise had a better accent than Kidman? Fights , sexual tension and the great American Dream, " Don't you die on me..."
The Micheal Flatley Collection
Aw cmon' people Irish jigs and a megalomaniac ? Who can ask for anything more?
Braveheart
O..k. so it's about the Scots but the feistiest character was an irish man
The Magdalen Sisters
A group of women get pregnant and are forced into a home, and are abused but find strength in their sisterhood. Girl power!
War of the Buttons
Kids have a huge war with buttons. Er, you have to watch it to understand... A parallel of Catholics and protestant? Er no just kids playing war.
So what can we get from all this? According to Hollywood : Irish women are feisty and don't get them pregnant. The irish make good matchmakers . Ireland is beautiful but everyone seems to want to go to America. They make good mobs especially if you have overused the Italian mafia. Leprechauns are bad asses if you steal their gold
And everything in Ireland is green
Happy St. Patrick's Day everybody!

Film & TV on DVD
John Ford's The Quiet Man was essential viewing on this day when I was growing up. Still love it!
Boondock Saints makes a fun St paddy's distraction too.
To be sure to be sure to be sure....
and all that malaky!
I am part Irish...and it is a shame the delightful lilt in the pure Irish voice, is so abused by the non-Irish!
I avoid any Sait Pat's day celebrations, especially now that I do not drink!
Very un-Irish of me I know!
cheers and kiss the blarney!!
fog
And there isn't anything wrong with drinking I don't !
And I have never needed to either...
