Fearless, 2006
The general premise of the film follows the rise and fall of the Martial Arts legend Hou Yuanjia. In between his childhood and eventual death there moments of drama and comedy. I really can’t say more with out ruining the movie for you really. It’s a simple enough idea and it’s something that does not requires more explanation than that to be quite honest.
Typical of Chinese films (at least the ones that I have seen), it pretty fast paced in certain parts and then the tempo and mood of the film changes usually after a dramatic event (tragic most of the time) has occurred, where the next scene is a slow panning scene of beautiful Asian landscape that is well constructed by awesome cinematographers and playing in the background a slow music score whilst seconds before there was fast paced fighting scene with screaming audience as the backdrop. Based in late 19th century China director Ronny Yu and his team have kept the traditional essence of China during the time. Although it is difficult to say how much of the martial arts scenes are true or dramatised for the viewing pleasure of the audience. But to be quite honest it didn't really matter and I didn't care, because the entire experience of the film was to enjoy the theatrics of martial arts and that it’s not just a fight but a performance. It's not surprising that much of the film is spend on a fight but despite that it was really entertaining to watch. I'm not sure whether or not it’s my ability to be easily entertained and amused or whether this is a really well made film (but I like to think it’s the latter). One might argue that it’s not as good as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Hero (here I'm just name dropping other marital art/Chinese films that I have seen) and frankly I wouldn't have a come back and probably just nod in agreement.
So ohk this isn't like my usual reviews which I suppose is more serious in nature than I totally forgot that this blog was a not so serious look at films, whoops. But then again most of the films (not all) that I have reviewed has usually lead me to write annoyed, highly critically pieces that makes me sound a lot more pretentious than I intended but I can't help if people make shitty films. I know I can't make better films that's not the point, I'm sure there are lots of people out there that couldn't do what I do. Which is laze about and waste time which actually requires an amazing amount of effort surprisingly and skills (again surprisingly)?
I know I'm digressing from the point of the entry but I was thinking of maybe starting up another blog for funnies. It would be a blog based on nothing (sounds familiar?). Mostly it would be my daily musings but nothing in particular. I know I'm pretty new this site and not what you call a regular blogger, but I think it would an adventure I might look into. That is of course if people want to read it. So that being said, please comment whether or not I should consider actually following thru with this. It would be much appreciated.
