Depp to play Tonto in The Lone Ranger

Can you imagine Depp as a Native American?

Word from IESB and Variety is that Johnny Depp will play the Native American Tonto, sidekick of the Lone Ranger in the movie version. (Depp is part Cherokee)

Seeing that Depp can pull off most anything, this will surely be easy peasy for Depp. But wait, who then will play the Lone Ranger?

If at first Nic Cage was interested, George Clooney seems to have taken the lead. (Oh no!)

According to sources, at a Disney event where Depp was announced to be playing The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, the fact that The Lone Ranger will also be made was announced. Depp appeared with the black mask over his eyes as William Tell's 'Overture' was played.

As much as I regularly drool for Johnny Depp, I find it sad that the part did not go to an actual Native American. There are many Native actors in Hollywood who would have been more than capable of playing the roll. I understand that the star power of Depp will draw more movie goers than an unknown actor, but there is a serious lack of rolls for minorities in the first place, and then a white person ends up being cast in a minority roll. It seems unfair.
