Artsy fartsy films vs. drains on civilization
I was sitting with one of my best friends and we were debating what movie we should watch. I reached over for the video " I am Legend" and she gave me The Look. The Look goes something like this : It is eyes catching me in a deadly stare , a little condescending nod of her head and small stretching of her mouth ... all of which expressed the following : ' I cannot believe you can resort to watching such mindless dribble when you can see Real Art".
O.k., here's the thing. I do know " real art" , i did film studies in school i know the drill. But here's the thing : When I am dead tired and really have no brain power left, i WANT my brain to be resting. Literally.
So most hollywood films, which is why they are so commercially successful, are usually following " The Hollywood Formula". They have a hero, who goes through a series of trials , there is a beginning , a middle and an end. A climax and an anti climax. And yes, most known actors tend to play the same roles over and over.
But hey, we just want to be entertained. Half the time in an art film you have to stand there scratching your head trying to figure out the next scene, or why on earth was there a pink puffed up gnome in one of the scenes.
Some of those films have a really good HUUH? factor to them. You leave the theater and still don't get what it was about. Of course, you will try to sound cool and educated with your friends discussing it in minute details, but really you have no idea. You might say that the pink dwarf represented the opression of materialism, or something. But no, it's just talk.
There is a place and time for these films, but let's not look down on anything else in the process, because at the end of the day most of us will go see it.

...I often find myself in that position. I had borrowed a Bergman Trilogy DVD set, and after watching one, I just couldn't bring myself to watch another one. Great movies, but requires such an investment, I find..

shakespere, black satires, complex sci-fi, and metaphorical imagery are best left for times where you can really concentrate . . . although nothing could make me sit through another james bond film, if i was that tired i would just go to bed! haha
