Filmsi - A not so serious look at films and film reviews

American Teen, 2008

Parody of the Breakfast Club cover
I watched this film a couple months ago now and it still feels like I watched it only a few weeks ago. So this is basically the initial thoughts on the film.

The supposed "documentary" is about the real lives of American teenagers from small town in Indiana. An hour and half full of teen drama - clicks, tears and insecurities. American Teen follows four teenagers in their last year of high school apparently with real problems. But honestly American Teen is really nothing original or even new. As documentaries goes it fails to bring anything exciting or insightful to the overdone premise of teenagers. There is also little purpose to the film, is trying to say that teens have not changed since we were first introduced to them in a James Dean film or is trying to demonstrate what teens are really like? If the latter then it clearly failed. There are moments in American Teen that showed that there is more to these teens than what is usually projected in the mass media, the vulnerability and in to a certain extent the innocence but the director Nanette Burstein gloss over these issues and then rely heavily on pre-existing stereotypes. Why specifically pick the characters of The Jock, Popular Girl, the Geek and the Misfit?? Furthermore it seems that even if these teens don't fit perfectly into these stereotypes they are forced into these stereotypes by constantly labelling them so.

American Teen is contrived and clearly scripted. It's as real as The Hills. It's like watching a poorly filmed and less likable version of a John Hughes film. Like I mentioned before it was very disappointing that it never thoroughly explored the underlying problems that the teens faced. Particularly when there was a discussion of self identity which it seemed that all of the characters were struggling with. Furthermore neither of the main characters was overly likable, some you disliked completely and others you pitied. Neither of the characters showed growth (but I guess in real life growth does not exactly happen) nor any particular depth.

The general viewing of the film wasn't too bad. It was a little clumsy and sometimes the camera was in weird angle but I think it was done so it felt more realistic, usually known as the fly on the wall technique.

I know I just being slamming this doco for being too scripted but it would be unjust if I didn't mention that despite it being a documentary it is still a subjective piece of work and therefore that should to be taken into consideration when watching documentaries (that's not a true depiction of reality). So that being mentioned it further angers me that this film is advertised as some sort of poster child of what teenagers are. It is a story of four teenagers in a small American town not how all teenagers are like. This is a misconceived idea of teenagers can only lead to potential misinformation to the audience. Honestly if Burnstien really wanted to show how teenagers are like wouldn't it be better to interview a bunch of teenagers from different racial, socio-economic status and from different parts of America then can it claim the title of American Teen. Focusing on a predominantly white middle to upper class area of America is no justification of the representation of the teenagers.

As one might have noticed I'm not too keen on this film at all. And I think that have justified my reasons to why I honestly believe you shouldn't really waste your time on watching American Teen at all. But this blog isn't here stop people from watching films (because this is a blog that appreciates all film) or stop people from making their own judgments on the film so if you really like films about teenagers then by all means watch it. But personally I rather watch a John Hughes's film, in particular The Breakfast Club (which I think what American Teen may be based on).

Sorry again for the long absences, there has be some technical problems on my part. And this isn't as long as pervious reviews, sorry again. All comments and criticisms are welcomed.

So Bad that its Good

Bad acting, nonsensical dribble, incoherent and just plain ridiculous and yet you are still watching and deep down inside you love it! These movies are so bad that they are kind of good. Why is something so dumb, stupid or plain bad so good? Well let's face if weren't for these films, what would we poke fun at or quote from??? Remember its only when you watch shitty films you can enjoy the good ones.

So here's my completely biased list of its sooo bad that it’s good....

Boy Town, 2006
This little known comedy was made in Australia henceforth barely anyone wanted to watch it and was probably a flop. This is pretty consistent with most Australian films. Taking the piss of boy bands, Boy Town tells the story of four "out of their prime" former members of the band Boy Town. With guidance from their old record company and manager they reignite their past and reform and do a come back tour. A bad case of mid-life crisis however the boys are not delusional they are well aware that they can't sing about groupies and puppy love but rather about love handles and family life and appeal not to a younger audience but to the same audience whom have grown up a little. The idea of taking the piss of anything is something that I love hence this film with a few one liners and pretty average cast was clearly my cup of tea. Feeling more like a very long sketch for a television show rather than feature length film, Boy Town is soo bad that its good.

The Princess Diaries 2:The Royal Engagement, 2004. As sequels go this isn't too bad that's probably because the original was only slightly better. PD 2 follows on from the first however Mia is now all grown up and is a ripe old age of 21. Training from her grandmother Mia prepares to eventually take over as the ruler of some unknown country. At 21 Mia is unsure if she is ready and believes that she needs time and more training. However her plans to be the ruling elite are squashed when an old standing law prohibits women to rule without being married. Too unrealistic to be to taken seriously PD 2 is a cute and fun film. It's cheesy and corny so much so that at time it's cringe worthy. Pointless and predictable storyline with a happy ending and rather unoriginal dribble for a script. The only real comfort is that well lets face it's for little girls not for adult audiences. And despite all that I loved it, the little girl in me always wanted to be a princess and since that's never going to happen in the near future I will just have to settle for a movie instead. Anne Hathaway was brilliant in this film, she is just so pretty and to be honest had pretty good chemistry with her on screen rival and love interest Chris Pine. PD 2 is awful but so awful that it’s was pretty awesome.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 1992
After watching Buffy you would have clearly felt that you have wasted 2 hours of your life that you simply cannot get back. This is a story about a girl, not an ordinary girl but a special girl, a very special girl named Buffy. Buffy is your stereotypical, cheer singing, pompom toting, bad early 90's fashion wearing bubbly blonde bombshell however completely bad-ass of course. At first Buffy has no idea she has the secret talent of slaying vampires until she meets some random man in a trench coat. So by day Buffy is your ordinary teenager but by night she’s your ass kicking, vampire slaying, bad 90's fashion wearing super hero, stopping some American city from getting sucked dry by vampires. What can I say if I haven't said it already, it's the early 90's still riding the wave of the 80's henceforth explaining the midriffs and exercise tights. I have to admit the idea of a vampire slayer is pretty cool and later become a cult TV show and it's not the story that made it so bad it really was the awful acting. It was the eye gauging type of acting hence meant it was over the top, unrealistic and became quite apparent they were just simply reading lines rather than acting. Essentially is a complete mess of film with no coherent logic in the plot and no effort from the cast and quite frankly become another early 90's flop and yet I kept watching.

Sugar and Spice, 2001
A supposed black comedy is neither black nor that humorous yet despite that it was still strangely entertaining. Based on a picture perfect town about picture perfect teenagers, who are of course popular, pretty and cheer leaders but I'm guessing not too smart. Queen Bee Diane fall preggers with her high school sweet heart and her and her dumb jock of a boyfriend is kicked out of home and is to defend for themselves. Despite all her troubles Diane remains cheerful, annoyingly so. Fortunately Diane her IQ is slightly but only just higher than of boyfriend's realises that smiling is going to feed your baby. Struggling with a job, high school and being up the duff Diane seeks the support from her BFF's who again aren’t that bright themselves. Somehow they come up with this ingenious plan of robbing the local department store (I think it was Wallmart) clearly these girls aim high. A teen movie at its average best is entertaining despite it being really forgettable. That will explain why many of you have never really heard of it unless you're a teen movie freak like myself.

You Don't Mess with the Zohan, 2008
This movie is so bad it hurts. Adam "I'm a JEW and I'm proud" Sandler makes a yet another over the top and politically incorrect comedy. Sandler is the Zohan who is a secret agent for Israeli army who actually prefers to cut hair. Shipped of to the Americas and staying with a friend Zohan lives the American dream - be broke, live in poverty and make it big living your dream or die trying. Finally getting a job in the slums of New York in a street where naturally a rival between the Jewish and Islamic communities but later united by the neutral dislike for red-neck Americans. Everyone has seen an Adam Sandler's film at least once in their life time; it’s like a must to some. So there are no surprises in Zohan. Adam Sandler is constantly relying on toilet humour and is hoping that even the teenage boys who probably make most of his audience is still interested. Pushing the level of how something that is so stupid can be funny, Zohan is the classic case of it’s so bad and that it’s kind of funny. Whether you be laughing from jokes or you're laughing at yourself for actually paying money to watch this nevertheless you're entertained.

Well here is my incomplete list of its so bad its good movies for now. I'm sure there are plenty of them out there, so if you have any suggestions feel free to drop a comment.

Hey

Hey all

Sorry that this blog has been a little slow, I have been busy with other things (mostly uni). Not to fear, in the not too distance future I shall post something up that is more interesting than this post. If there is anyone of you out there that actually reads my blogs, I promise you don't have to wait that long. So in the mean time I wanted to share something that I found was heaps funny (Gen Y, what can I say we struggle to express yourself with the use of proper english). For those Harry Potter fans out there you will find this "heaps funny" as I do and if you have Facebook can probably join the group and enjoy it too.

Really Long Link

Also if anyone finds anything cool like this related to movies feel free to comment and I will look into and share it with the rest.

Anywho thats it from me for now. I hope everyone is having a chocolate-filled Easter and having a awesome break.
